Yellow

This image is from my trip to Brazil, where the fruit is incomparable. I like these papayas and passion fruits in their basket...

Pure Energy

I took this picture at a small club in Bed-Stuy in March of 2008. The woman in the picture is Simone. I love the light trains in this, and it really looks like her energy is exploding all over the picture. She put on a great show, and I think this image depicts the excitement of that night.

Jackfruit

Although you may not necessarily know that from this photograph. I love exploring textures in photography, and taking things out of context. This is a perfect example of that. I don't like how the light tapers out at the bottom of the photograph, but I suppose there is nothing I can do about that short of heavily manipulating this photo.

Chickens in the Trees

These chicken figurines are in my grandmother's kitchen. I suppose they hold a particular significance for me because, as I was snapping away with my camera, she would be tut-tutting behind me. These are called Angolese chicken, and they have black feathers with white dots. They are a very popular folk art item in great swaths of Brazil.

Rustic Charm?

I really like this picture. I love the simplicity of it, and the strong colors. Compositionally, I think it's pretty well balanced; more important, though, is the interaction between the watering can and the brush. It looks like the can is cornering the smaller, sort of frightened brush. Or, it's a secret rendezvous of some kind. Perhaps I've gone off the deep end, but don't these cleaning tools feel like characters?

Doughy

Sometimes I can't tell whether or not an image is actually good, and that's the case with this one. I wonder about my aesthetics, and whether or not I can trust it in relation to what truly makes a good photograph. I don't think of this photo as particularly poetic or effective, but I've been told that it's honest and artistic, perhaps more so than other pictures I have taken.

Pictures at an Exhibition

Although the goal here is to post images that I have taken, and a commentary on what I like to point my camera at, this first image was not taken by me. I think there is something classic about this image. It seems a modern take on Vermeer's "Girl with a Pearl Earring." The subject is gazing at something off the canvas, lips slightly parted. She is placid but attentive. I generally do not take portraits, though this image makes me think that I should. In many ways, this image is not at all representative of what I tend to photograph. What a start...
